AVIATION ACCIDENT: Pilot Injured in El Segundo Chopper Crash

March 14, 2011

Los Angeles - A pilot suffered serious injuries after his helicopter crashed at Raytheon plant in El Segundo on Sunday at 9:30 am.

According to Los Angeles police reports, the helicopter was hauling a huge air-conditioning unit when the pilot lost control of the flying controls and crashed at a facility’s patio area. The helicopter caught fire and the flames sprawled into the first two floors of the building. The pilot was rushed to a local hospital for treatment of moderate injuries.

Reports said that the cable attached to the air-conditioning unit snarled onto something, causing the helicopter to veer off its course. Raytheon employees who were working on the ground were able to rescue the pilot before the helicopter burst into flames.

El Segundo firefighters arrived and doused the fire in 40 minutes. No other injuries were reported. Authorities are still investigating the details on the cause of accident.
