Plane Crash Settled by Blink 182's Travis Barker

On September 19, 2008, a Learjet carrying 6 people crashed in South Carolina after its pilots attempted to abort the plane’s take-off.

Four people were killed, including the two pilots but Travis Barker, the drummer of the popular rock band Blink 182 and the recently deceased DJ Adam Goldstein, survived the plane crash accident.

Pilots Sarah Lemmon, 31, co-pilot James Bland, 52, Chris Baker, 29, and Charles Still, 25 died in the crash while Barker suffered second and third degree burns which covered approximately 1/3 of his body.

According to the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, the crash occurred because the thrust mechanism on the private plane had not been in the correct position to slow the plane down when the pilots were trying to land when they thought they heard a plane tire blow out.

The two survivors, as well as the decedents of the other victims, filed claims for damages against Learjet, Goodyear, and even the insurance companies of the deceased pilots.

Adam Goldstein’s family also filed a case for wrongful death against the same companies.

Travis Barker and Still’s estate has come to a settlement with the defending companies for an undisclosed amount.

Under the law, damages mean any money or compensation claimed by or ordered to be paid to, any person who has suffered a loss or injury as a result of another’s negligence or breach of duty.

Any person whose act or omission caused injury or death to another, may be held liable for damages.

Thus, in this instance, the pilot’s negligence in ensuring that the thrust mechanism is in proper position before they landed the plane is a valid ground for filing damages against the company.
