BOATING ACCIDENT: Plea Deal that would Reduce Sentence Rejected by Accused Coast Guardsman

October 14, 2010

San Diego - Defense lawyers of Petty Officer 3rd Class Paul Ramos, the boat driver accused in the boat accident that resulted in the death of 8-year old Anthony DeWeese, have refused a plea deal offer that could have reduced their client’s prison sentence as offered by the prosecution.

Reports said the deal would send the boat driver to a special court-martial, which means he would only get a one-year sentence at the maximum and protection from a bad-conduct discharge. This could have been done if Ramos would only accept responsibility for the fatal boat collision.

However, Ramos’ lawyers did not pursue the deal as they say the final decision will be made by Adm. Joseph Castillo, Coast Guard District 11 commander.

A week after the plea offer, Ramos was called to face a general court-martial on charges of involuntary manslaughter, negligent homicide and lesser counts, which carry up to 20 years in prison.
