BICYCLE ACCIDENT: Professional triathlete injured in bicycle accident

March 25, 2010

Los Angeles - Professional triathlete Jordan Rapp was hit by a car at Lewis Road intersection, Oxnard, Los Angeles on Tuesday at 5:40 p.m.

Rapp was riding his bicycle when a car made a swift left turn, hitting him in front. California Highway Patrol Officer Frank Paramo said that he suspects a commuting farm worker, who is speeding into oncoming traffic.

According to police, Rapp suffered multiple injuries - clavicle and scapula bone fracture, and lacerations and contusions in head and neck. Jill Savege, Rapp's wife, said his husband lost about three liters of blood. Rapp continues to receive medical treatment in the intensive care unit of St. Johns Regional Medical center in Oxnard, California.

"Rapp remains sedated and on a ventilator, though doctors say that a ventilator is not mandatory for Rapp to breathe. Rapp's brain function is normal and there is no indication of nerve or spinal cord injury," Savege said.

There were no witnesses at the scene. Officer Paramo said that the actual cause of the accident is still under investigation. Rapp is supposed to race this weekend for the 70.3- Oceanside triathlon.
