CAR ACCIDENT: Riverside Chief Involved in Crash Investigated for Impairment

February 10, 2010

Riverside – The California Highway Patrol is investigating the car accident that involved the Riverside Police chief.

There are allegations that the police chief, Russ Leach, may have been impaired or drunk when he crashed his city-issued Chrysler 300 into a fire hydrant at about 3am this morning.

The City Manager’s Office said that Leach was just placed on medical leave yesterday.

The CHP is also investigating why the Riverside Police officers were not able to indicate that suspicion on their initial report.

According to CHP, Riverside officers stopped their chief in the damaged car a few miles from the accident scene.

It is unclear yet if they noticed any impairment on their chief.

Leach was not hurt in the crash but the car had fender damage and two blown tires.

All calls to the chief’s office were referred to the city attorney’s office.
