RECREATIONAL PARK ACCIDENT: Rocklin girl critical after Lake Tahoe sledding accident

April 7, 2010

Rocklin - A 10-year-old girl suffered multiple injuries when she collided with two small trees at Lake Tahoe sledding area on March 27.

Lauren Jones, an elementary student at Parker Whitney Elementary School, has remained in critical condition at the Intensive Care Unit of Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno.

Lauren sustained leg, ribs, and skull fractures. Doctors needed to put her into coma, and administer several treatments along with ventilator and feeding tube.

The Jones family had intended to spend a special snow day at Lake Tahoe. "We just went sledding for the day, but Lauren had to go to the top," Jason Jones said.

Lauren used to be a cheerleader with Rocklin Junior Thunder and Junior Pee Wee cheer. Rocklin's The Pizza Place helped raise $5,000 as donation for the Jones family, according to Patti Murphy, Lauren's cheerleading coach.

Lauren will undergo further leg surgery on Wednesday.

"The student government and other youth sports group are working on more fundraising events to help the Jones family," Principal Denny Rush said.
