Rough Roads and Dangerous Drivers

The roads may be a lot more dangerous than you’d think—33 million drivers all over America do not know or have any knowledge of basic traffic laws.

Last May 23, 2009, the General Motors Acceptance Corporation released the results of the 2008 National Drivers Test which was conducted on all 50 states including the District of Columbia. The survey revealed that 16.4% of American drivers which totals to 33 million, don't know the rules of the road.

The questions asked were derived from the official Department of Motor Vehicle tests. Some of the questions were simple enough such as, what is the safe distance to maintain behind a car or what to do when approaching a yellow light.

Based on the press release, here is the official list of the ten lowest-scoring states, according to GMAC:

  1. New Jersey
  2. Washington, DC
  3. New York
  4. Massachusetts
  5. Georgia
  6. Mississippi
  7. Hawaii
  8. Lousiana
  9. West Virginia
  10. Maryland

Obviously, being in the top 10 in this instance, is no cause for celebration. Motor vehicle accidents continue to be the leading cause of unintended deaths for most Americans. A driver, who doesn’t know basic traffic rules or what traffic signs mean is alarming for other motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians.

GMAC finds that the results from the 2008 are alarming as a huge number of Americans (33 million) continue to lack knowledge of basic rules of the road even though they are licensed. A finding also showed that 84 percent could not identify the correct action to take when approaching a steady yellow traffic light. 73 percent could not properly identify a typical safe following distance from the car in front of them.

Unfortunately, ignorance of the law is no excuse. So better brush up, not just on your driving skills but also your knowledge of safe driving practice and pertinent laws.

Ignorance definitely isn’t bliss and one can’t complacent about your driving skills especially if you have no idea what the red, yellow and green sign on the intersection mean. Because even if you’re licensed but not fit to take the wheel, it’s a rough and dangerous road for everyone else otherwise.
