Santa Fe Freight Train Critically Injures 2 Men

January 5, 2010

Anaheim - Two men were critically injured after their car was hit by a freight train early Monday morning, Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Greg McKeown said in an interview.

McKeown said the 3,700-ton freight train struck the two men’s BMW around 7:25 am near the Anaheim-Placentia border.

According to a preliminary investigation, the train was traveling eastbound at a speed of 45 to 50 mph when it struck the victims’ car which was crossing the track. Investigators believe the car’s driver was trying to beat the train but miscalculated its speed.

Meanwhile, authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims until family members could be notified.

About 19 people died last year while crossing Caltrain tracks, four of them were teenagers who committed suicide.
