Spinal Cord Injury
Spinal cord injury (SCI) has been defined as damage to the spinal cord resulting in sensory and/or motor impairment. The National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center reveals that a spinal cord injury can occur from either trauma or disease to the vertebral column or the spinal cord itself with the latter cause comprising most of SCI cases in the country. The spinal cord does not have to be severed in order for a loss of function to occur. In most SCI cases, the spinal cord is intact, but the damage to it results in loss of function.
A Spinal cord injury may be caused either by external factors or by those that are inherent in the victim himself. According to the National Spinal Cord Injury Association, spinal cord injuries are caused in the United States:
- 44% - motor vehicle accidents
- 24% - acts of violence
- 22% - falls
- 8% - sports
- 2% - other causes such as abscesses, tumors, polio, spina bifida and Friedrich's Ataxia, a rare inherited disorder.
Additionally, studies show that since the year 1988, forty-five percent of all injuries have been complete, while fifty-five percent were incomplete. Complete injuries result in total loss of sensation and function below the injury level. Incomplete injuries result in partial loss. Complete does not necessarily mean the cord has been severed.
Considering the weight of physical discomfort a spinal cord injury may cause a victim, and similarly taking into consideration the accompanying implications that the said injury brings, a judicial action through a competent lawyer, in instances of SCIs arising from accidents, abuse, etc., can prove to serve the purpose of adequate reparation best.
