April 14, 2010

Los Angeles – The California Department of Public Health has slapped seven California hospitals with a total of $475, 000 in fines for violations that include endangering babies and “leaving a sponge inside a woman’s body after a caesarian operation”.

News reports said the 10 penalties ranged from $25,000 to $100,000 for various code violations of hospital in Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Francisco, and Yolo counties. Some of the hospitals that were penalized included Southwest Healthcare System and Kaiser Foundation Hospital, among others.

Southwest Healthcare system faces three fines amounting to $225,000 while Kaiser has two fines totaling $75,000.

The hospital however denied the allegations, and said they will appeal the fines and try to rectify the matter or make improvements.

The penalty was the result of state health inspection conducted in September and November last year.
