PERSONAL INJURY LAW: State Senate Approves Law Requiring Ski/Snowboard Helmets

June 1, 2010

Sacramento – State lawmakers have passed a law that would require skiers and snowboarders to wear helmets. The proposed law was patterned after the bicycle helmet law and would mandate kids younger than 18 to wear helmets while skiing or snowboarding.

Senator Leland Dee (San Francisco-Dem), one of the bill sponsors, said the bill was aimed at promoting safety for kids as he pointed out that nearly 7,000 children suffer from head injuries on the slopes every year.

Studies also show that when helmets are used, the incidence of serious or traumatic head injury is reduced by about 30 percent.

Many of the Republican senators however think that the bill was “too far-fetched” and called it one of those “nanny” bills or bills which tell people how to run their lives.
