Study Shows Fatigue as Major Cause of US Traffic Accidents

November 2, 2009

Salem, Virginia - A new study has found that driver fatigue was the major cause of road accidents last year, injuring nearly 2 million people in the US. Research group National Sleep Foundation (NSF) said more than 105 million drivers have admitted to driving while feeling drowsy or sleepy last year while some 54 million said they do this regularly.

“This [study] shows that driver fatigue is as dangerous as drunk driving since it can slow people’s reaction time, impair their awareness, and affect their decision-making ability while driving”, sleep expert Raquel Rothe said.

“People who are driving while feeling sleepy or tired are not just putting themselves on danger but also other motorists”, Rothe added.

In an effort to spread awareness on fatigue driving, the NSF has declared Nov. 2-8 as Drowsy Driving Prevention Week.

NSF officials said this annual campaign, which is already in its third year, aims to teach people on the risk of fatigue driving and ways to prevent accidents associated with this.
