Survival Guide to Child Drowning Accidents

In Hayward, a two-year old toddler died in a drowning accident.

The child was allegedly found unresponsive in the residence’s pool and by the time the emergency unit has arrived, bystanders were performing CPR. Advanced life support was performed on the toddler before the little boy was taken to Eden Medical Center.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is the second leading cause of death for children between the ages of 1 to 6 years old in the United States.

Likewise, the CDC reported that for every child who dies from drowning, four more children receive emergency department care for nonfatal submersion injuries.

But even if the child survives a drowning accident, it can cause serious injuries and disability such as brain damage, memory problems, learning disabilities, and sometimes even the permanent loss of basic functioning.

Children and water are like moths drawn to a flame. Children who play on the side of the family pool are often the victims of drowning. It is simply not safe for a child to be left near the water especially if unsupervised.

Here are the six most common causes of child drowning according to the Arizona Department of Health:

  • There is no barrier to the house pool
  • The fence is inadequate
  • The gate or latch failed or was left propped open
  • The back safety door or the latch failed
  • Lack of supervision
  • Other or unknown causes
