The Damaging Effects of Dangerous Drugs

From the massive recall being made because of moldy, smelly Tylenol to the revelation that Avandia, a diabetes drug is prone to causing heart attacks, dangerous drugs have taken a whole new meaning – prescription and over the counter medication can be just as lethal as illegal drugs.

As far back as 2007, Avandia has been the subject of many studies and controversies which linked it to heart attack and increased stroke risks. It released a study in 2009 which claimed that there is no connection but even that was criticized.

According to a testimony of a former Food and Drug Administration (FDA), GlaxoSmithKline deliberately withheld information from the regulators which suggested that the drug indeed posed an increase risk for people with serious heart problems.

Further records also show that the company failed to give the FDA full information on the drug’s risk in a timely manner. There are currently 11,000 pending suits against the company but the drug has yet to be pulled from the market.

The investigation is still ongoing which will later on determine whether Avandia shall be pulled from the market.

Medicines are one of the most indispensable products today. From vitamins, to pain-relievers, to medication for diseases, a lot of people rely on drugs and medicine to improve or maintain their health.

But there are instances when drugs become dangerous to human health instead of being beneficial. In Alabama, a man was awarded $25.16 million worth of damages after his use of Accutane led to bowel disorder complications which resulted to having his colon removed.

Other drugs have also proven to be fatal, in the 80’s, seven people died after ingesting Extra-Strength Tylenol laced with potassium cyanide.

There are many reasons why drugs which were originally meant to be helpful to health have turned out to be hazardous. The main reason is basically product defect. It can range from the manufacturing defects brought about by unsanitary or improper factory conditions or even because of insufficient drug warnings and labels.

If you suffered any injury or wrongful death because of the use of such dangerous drugs, you may file a product liability claim against the company and recover any medical expenses or loss you suffered because of the drug’s damaging effect. You have the right to be compensated so seek the services of an expert product liability attorney.
