The Young and the Reckless

Teens who dreamed of ice cream instead get chased by cops and crash.

Yes, it’s all said been before, young drivers are a danger, not just to themselves but potentially, to everyone in their vehicle as well as other people on the road. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety attributed it to “immaturity” and well, the video from Michigan pretty much speaks for itself.

In Howell, Michigan, a Chevy Tahoe got into a high speed chase with the cops. Deputies had a hard time keeping up as the car blew through several stop signs, taking wild turns which nearly hit cars and with a speed that topped 100mph.

The chase ended when the car reached a dead end with an embankment. The car hit the embankment and got launched 10 feet into the air. However, when the deputies got off to arrest what seems to be a reckless driver who may be DUI, they realize that the car is full of kids!

All that racket was because of Dairy Queen! The 14-year old driver allegedly stole--err, took his parent’s car out to go to their local Dairy Queen.

Fortunately, no one was hurt in what can only be described as an utterly dangerous excursion to the ice cream store. Emergency crews and parents arrived at the scene quickly.

A Teen Fact Sheet from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) claims that teens are more likely than older drivers to underestimate dangerous situations or not be able to recognize hazardous situations.

Speeding is a common problem for young drivers but the high speed police chase should be a sobering reminder that speeding is not only against the law, but life-threatening.

One can only hope that these kids realize that it was a miracle that they escaped unscathed from such recklessness.

According to the CDC, in 2005, 12 teenagers died every day from motor vehicle injuries. Motor vehicle crashes are also identified the leading cause of death for U.S. teens, with suicide and homicide at a distant second and third.

It is easy to feel invincible at a young age—the children involved in the car chase probably thought it was just a grand (albeit terrifying) adventure. But their parents should make sure that they impress the gravity of the situation on their kids and the fact that they are not above the law just because they are minors.

It is at this point, where the intervention of the authorities and the guidance of the parents will make the most impact in shaping their child’s future and mindset especially when it comes to safe driving.
