WORKPLACE INJURY: Three Soldiers Died in California Live-Fire Training

April 13, 2010

Los Angeles - At least three soldiers suffered fatal injuries after a 120 mm mortar round exploded prematurely during a military exercise in California fort on Friday.

The soldiers were from 1st Brigade Combat Team from Fort Riley, Kan. They were completing their last day of a four-week combat training when the mortar round exploded from its armored carrier at 2:30 a.m.

Another soldier suffered minor injuries and was treated at Weed Army Community Hospital on Fort Irwin.

"The injury was not life-threatening and he was listed in stable condition," Base Spokesman Maj. Rob Ali explained.

About 3,500 soldiers from Fort Riley participated in the National Training Center's realistic combat program. About 1.2 million soldiers have completed its special course since 1982.
