ESCALATOR ACCIDENT: Toddler's Finger Severed in Van Nuys Courthouse Escalator Accident

February 2, 2011

Los Angeles - A toddler's finger was cut off after an escalator accident in Van Nuys Courthouse on Tuesday at 9 a.m.

The 17-month-old boy was riding an escalator with his mother when his index finger was caught and cut in the foot tread. Some people pressed the emergency stop button and wrapped the boy's hand with cloth to prevent blood loss, according to reports.

Los Angeles Firefighters arrived at the scene shortly and transported the boy to Richie Pediatric Trauma Center in Northridge Hospital.

Los Angeles County Sheriff officers disassembled the escalator and found the cut finger as still intact after 90 minutes. Reports said that the doctors were able to re-affix the index finger, yet follow-up treatment will be required.

The Los Angeles Escalator Maintenance supervisor extended his help in the rescue operation. Authorities are still investigating the details on the cause of accident.
