Tour Bus Crashes and Driving Under the Conditions

Late November and December seem to be a dangerous time for tour buses.

From Miley Cyrus to Britney Spears, it seemed to be a bad time for concert tour buses when the two pop princesses’ buses got into a bad crash while on the road. Miley’s bus crashed in Greensboro, North Carolina while the Circus Tour Bus of Spears went down in Australia.

While fans could breathe a sigh of relief as the two performers were reportedly safe and uninjured, the tour bus crashes were not without injuries or fatalities as William G. Douglas, the driver of Cyrus’ bus, died.

Most recently (and more unfortunately), alternative rock band Weezer also got into a tour bus crash just outside Albany, New York.

The accident happened at 7:30AM when the bus driver lost control of the bus after it hit a patch of ice. The bus went off the road and plunged about 8-10 vertical feet into a muddy ravine off to the right of the Thruway.

Rivers Cuomo, the frontman of the band was injured in the crash and suffered three cracked ribs while a female assistant had two fractured ribs and a fractured lower vertebrae.

Even the safest roads can become dangerous if attended by weather conditions such as rain or snow. Rain and snow and ice on the road can cause cars to skid, especially the drivers are driving too fast or going downhill.

Drivers should always drive more carefully these times because slippery roads almost always spell disaster for the driver and his passengers. If you can’t avoid driving on a rainy or snowy day, in order to prevent potential personal injury lawsuits, here are some safety tips when driving under the condition:

  • Stay farther than your usual distance behind the vehicle ahead and drive more slowly.
  • When approaching curves and intersections, always slow down.
  • Try to avoid making fast turns.
  • Avoid quick stops. “Pump” the brakes to slow or stop. (Do not pump antilock brakes.)
  • Before going down a steep hill, shift to low gear.
  • If you can’t avoid driving outside, watch out for ice patches, wet leaves, oil, or deep puddles.
