Toyota Recalls Floor-mats After 5 People Died

September 29, 2009

Carmaker Toyota announced a massive recall on its floor-mat affecting more than 3.8 million vehicles following reports that the uneven mats can snag the gas pedal, killing at least five people and injuring 17 others in the US.

In a statement, Toyota said it wants a permanent fix to make its vehicles safer for the consumers. According to reports, the company has started receiving complaints regarding the uneven floor-mats since 2004.

Meanwhile, the government has received 102 cases of gas pedal being stuck under the floor-mat and 13 crashes which are attributed to this defective auto part.

In August 28, California Highway Patrol Officer Mark Saylor, 45, and three of his family members were killed after hitting an SUV.

According to police reports, Chris Lastrella, 38, Saylor’s brother-in-law, called a 911 operator a minute before the crash to report that the accelerator pedal was stuck.

Investigators from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said that all passengers died including Saylor’s wife Cleofe, 45, and daughter Mahala, 13.

Meanwhile, the driver of the SUV survived in the accident.
