Tragic Tailgating Accident: Follow the Three Second Rule

According to the California Department of Motor Vehicles, most rear-end car crash accidents are caused by tailgating.

Recently in Los Angeles, three people were killed when an SUV rear-ended a big-rig truck in the westbound lanes near Sunland Boulevard.

A family was believed to be the occupants of the SUV which burst into flames after it crashed against the back of the truck. Killed in the crash were a man, a woman and a 14-year old.

A bystander reportedly ran over to the SUV and pulled out two children from the back of the burning vehicle while the truck driver stayed inside his truck. The 8-year-old and 10-year-old children were allegedly not injured but were taken to the hospital. The driver of the big rig truck was also brought to the hospital for chest pains.

Unfortunately, by the time the L.A. Fire Unit arrived, the rest of the family inside the SUV has succumbed to the fire.

It is dangerous to follow other vehicles ahead of you on the road too closely, especially big rig trucks. Trucks have “No Zones” or blind spots and if you happen to fall in one of those areas, truck drivers often have no idea that you are right there. Thus, their ability to avoid collisions is compromised if you’re in the No Zone.

The best way to avoid the same tragedy happening to you, your friends or your family is to follow the three second rule.

Try to count one-thousand-one, one-thousand two, one-thousand three when the vehicle ahead of you passes a certain point such as a sign. If you reach the same point or sign before you finish counting to three, then it means you are following too closely.
