RAILROAD ACCIDENT: Train Collision in Colton under Investigation

October 18, 2011

Colton - Authorities are looking into possible causes of the accident that resulted in the derailment of two trains which collided between La Cadena Drive and Rancho Avenue, south of 10 Freeway on Tuesday, reports said.

Reports said the crash involving the Union Pacific and the Santa Fe trains resulted in the closure of 10 Freeway between Pepper Avenue and the 215 Freeway and several train service interruptions in the area. Train officials announced that Trains 803, 805 and 683 were canceled to give way to the investigations.

Although one tank was carrying hot asphalt and two were carrying ferric chloride, authorities allayed fears of contamination as there were no immediate signs of leaks. There were at least six cars involved in the collision.

Despite that, classes at nearby Colton High School and Wilson Elementary School were canceled.

The results of the investigations will be announced soon.
