Two Wrongs Don't Make a Right

While science teaches us that two negatives make a positive, the same doesn’t necessarily hold true in most cases.

21-year-old Jessica Shekell of Fullerton killed 2 women and wounded 2 young girls in a suspected drunken crash on the 91 Freeway in Anaheim. Shekell was driving west in the eastbound Fas Trak lanes.

Shekell’s black 2003 Toyota Tacoma crashed head-on into a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado. The CHP reported that none of the people in the Chevrolet were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident and it’s driver, 44-year old Sally Miguel, 44 died at the scene and the front seat passenger, Patricia Miguel, 30, died after she was taken to the hospital.

11-year-old Sara Miguel and 15-year-old Mary Miguel were also injured in the crash but fortunately, were reported in a stable condition.

Shekell also suffered major injuries from the crash but was probably spared because she was wearing her seatbelt. Shekell, who is a first-semester sociology major at Cal State Fullerton is facing charges for driving under the influence.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, 1,652 lives could be saved and 22,372 serious injuries can be avoided each year through increased seatbelt use.

Accidents can happen at any time and sometimes, through no fault of the driver at all so wearing a seatbelt is the only thing standing between certain death or paralyzing injury.

While it is true that Shekell’s wrong way driving triggered the tragic accident, the consequences would have been less fatal had the Miguel family taken the time to wear a seatbelt.

California law expressly mandates that all drivers and passengers wear a seatbelt while inside or operating a motor vehicle. Clearly, the law was meant to save lives.

On the road, you have no control over the actions and decisions of other drivers. The best thing you can do for yourself and your family is to take the time to buckle your seatbelt before heading out. It is the single most effective traffic safety device ever invented.
