CAR ACCIDENT: US Forest Service Employee Injured in Car Crash near Kern River

March 17, 2011

Kern River Canyon - Kyle Villa, a US Forest Service employee was traveling westbound on Highway 178 near the mouth of the Kern River Canyon when his vehicle veered off the roadway and fell approximately 300 feet and crashed onto large boulders near the Kern River, reports said.

Villa said he was driving an older Forest Service truck. Its steering wheel was locked and threw him to the right side and he was ejected from it.

He suffered broken ribs, broken sternum, a broken back and a collapsed lung and he was brought to Medical Center in Bakersfield and spent five days there.

After all the injuries he suffered, Villa felt extremely lucky to be alive. Villa said “Those injuries were minor compared to what they could have been. The seatbelt saved my life because without it, I could have been thrown out and run over by the truck.”

Villa, who is seeing a doctor in a couple of weeks, wants to be released and get back to work soon.

Villa and his family are so thankful to the Kern County Fire Department, Kern County Sheriff's Office Air 5, Mike Madden and the civilian that named Mike.
