PRODUCT RECALL: USDA Recalls Cargill Ground Turkey for Salmonella Outbreak

August 3, 2011

Washington - The US Department of Agriculture has announced the recall of 36 million pounds of Cargill ground turkey which were found to be responsible for the salmonella outbreak that killed one person in Sacramento and sickened at least 76 others in 26 states.

The recall came only after USDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were able to pinpoint the exact source of the salmonella outbreak.

Cargill, on the other hand, said they are recalling fresh and ground turkey products from their Springdale, Arkansas plant, from February 20 to August 2 for possible contamination. The affected products include Safeway, Kroger and Honeysuckle White.

The company said they have halted and suspended turkey production at the plant while investigation is on-going.

The USDA advised consumers to return all recalled products where they were purchased for a refund.
