TRAIN ACCIDENT: Union Pacific Train Hits Car in Pacoima, Driver Uninjured

January 20, 2011

Los Angeles - A driver who had fallen asleep on the wheel was hit by a Union Pacific train in Pacoima on Thursday at 1:15 am.

The driver stopped at the railroad crossing on Branford Street and San Fernando when the cargo train crashed onto the front car and cut it in half. But the Pacoima elderly driver, who has fallen asleep at the back seat, was left uninjured after the rear half spun 180 degrees, according to Los Angeles Police reports.

Reports said that the man illegally parked his Hyundai Sonata on the prohibited track lane, causing the 59-car train to rip it in half. The blunt force caused damage to the train's track several meters to Sylmar destination.

However, the emergency device installed at the front of the train has prevented further damage to the car, Los Angeles police officers explained.

Authorities arrested the driver for suspicion of Driving under Influence (DUI).
