Workplace Accident: Worker Injures Hand in Machinery Accident

April 5, 2010

Cotati - A printing shop worker cut his hand in machinery accident on early morning on Monday. Lon Martinsen, a worker for Grafix Screen Printing for ten years, lost his hand while using a huge paper cutter, Office Manager Michele Holman said.

“He was using a paper cutter, a really big one. We're not sure what happened,” Holman said.

Holman said that the Rancho Adobe Firefighters arrived at the Portal Street business around 7:50 a.m.

“The employees already had a tourniquet applied to the injured limb. Firefighters supported what they'd done and an ambulance crew quickly followed and began more extensive medical aid," Fire Capt. Larry Martinez said.

Martinez said the employees used shirts and old clothes as bandage to stop Martinsen’s bleeding. He was treated at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital and was later on transferred to San Francisco hospital. Doctors were trying to re-attach his hand.

“He was bleeding so badly. We tried to keep him calm until the emergency people came. It was just really scary, the blood was going everywhere,” Holman said.
