PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT: Young Driver Struck and Killed while Walking in 110 Freeway after Crash

March 18, 2011

Los Angeles – A teenage driver who was involved in an accident early Friday morning died after he was struck by an SUV while walking on Harbor (110) Freeway, the California Highway Patrol said.

The accident occurred at about 1:40 on the northbound lane of the freeway. Bernabe Basurto, 19, the victim, was earlier involved in a crash with another vehicle, according to preliminary investigation. His vehicle was disabled.

Assistant Chief Ed Winter of the coroner's office said Basurto got out of his car and walked in the number 2 lane for unknown reasons. A 2008 Mazda Tribute traveling at the number 3 lane transferred to number 2 to avoid hitting the stalled vehicles but then struck Basurto.

The 60-year-old driver of the SUV was taken to a hospital due to minor injuries sustained, the CHP said.
