DRIVING DISTRACTION: Zero-tolerance Campaign on Cell phone Use Resulted to 1,000 Citations

April 6, 2011

California - Implementation of the “zero tolerance” campaign on the illegal use of cell phone while driving last Monday and Tuesday resulted to citation of about 1,000 drivers, the California Highway Patrol said Wednesday.

The campaign stretched out from Kern County to Stanislaus and Mariposa. Valley CHP officers, sheriff’s deputies, and police officers are taking part in the campaign.

About 40 drivers were cited for texting or reading messages, while 15 citations were given to those who violated driving distraction regulations. Drivers ticketed for texting will have to pay a minimum of $159 for their first ticket.

The campaign is expected to last for a whole month in the state, with the help of the CHP and about 280 and police and sheriff’s department officers.
