Social Security Disability ProgramsThere are at least five major types of Social Security Disability programs.
- Social Security Disability Insurance
- Supplemental Security Income
These two programs are the largest of several Federal programs that provide assistance to people with disabilities. While these two programs are dissimilar in many ways, both are governed by the Social Security Disability Administration and only individuals who have a disability and meet medical criteria may qualify for benefits under either program.
