Police officials reported a fatal hit-and-run in the South Los Angeles area Wednesday morning. The driver fatally hit a bicyclist and sped away.  The LAPD is offering a $50,000 reward to those who can give vital information that will lead to the arrest of the driver.

Under California Vehicle Code § 20002, a person is guilty of “hit-and-run” if he leaves the accident scene, fails to provide his information to the other party involved, and if there are damages to the other party’s property. A person convicted of a hit-and-run may face time in jail, thousands of dollars in fines, years in probation, and compensation to the victim for injuries and property damages.

In 2019, the LAPD reported an increase of 69% in hit-and-runs involving fatalities. As the popularity of bike shares and fitness cycling in the city has increased, so has bicycle accidents. According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, more bicycle accidents occurred in the last three years than the previous three-year period.

Cyclists sustain more injuries than those involved in car collisions since they have less protection. Treatments for such injuries could cost tens up to hundreds of thousands of dollars. Some injuries may lead to more life-threatening injuries such as brain injuries, spine injuries, or even death.
